I have written a hymn for the Feast of the Holy Trinity. I have only had time to dedicate to hymnwriting (don’t worry—substantive articles are forthcoming!), so I pray that it is a blessing to you. It is written to the tune of PUTNAM, the tune “O Savior of our Fallen Race” (LSB 403). Blessed Trinitytide, dear friends!
1. O Trinity, our God and Lord,
Preserve us through Thy sacred Word
That we with faith and love confess
Thy hallowed name which we profess.
Lord, have mercy!2. O Father, all-creating Lord,
Thou madest all things through the Word,
Who took upon Himself our frame
And to this fallen world once came.
Lord, have mercy!3. Begotten from eternity,
Thou, Christ, art King of Majesty.
O Virgin’s Son, Thou took on Thee
The weight of our iniquity.
Lord, have mercy!4. Proceeding from the Father, Son,
O Spirit, Thou art with them one,
One in the Father’s majesty
And one in sacred Unity.
Lord, have mercy!5. God is one God, yet Three in One—
Honor and praise to Him be sung!
Three Persons in one Godhead blest:
Be this by all the world confessed.
Lord, have mercy!6. Must we confess this mystery—
Can faith abound with certainty?
The nature of our God is veiled,
Yet Him alone by faith we hail.
Lord, have mercy!7. This is the holy catholic faith—
To it we cling through life and death.
One must believe and thus confess
If they desire God’s promised rest.
Lord, have mercy!8. Praise we the Father and the Son
And Holy Spirit, with them one:
Our Triune God forevermore
We honor, worship, and adore.
Lord, have mercy!Text: Andrew Harrill, 2025.
